City Hall

Dim T for lunch

Tate Modern

London Eye (just passed by!)

London Walks: Old Westminster by Gaslight

Crossed Westminster Bridge, passed Lambeth Palace, back over Lambeth Bridge, through Georgian streets to Marquis of Granby pub and back to Palace of Westminster

Home!

A long and enjoyable day!

The Marquis of Granby is named after a much admired British general and is one of many pubs bearing his name. In the 18th Century Granby was commander of the British forces and loved by his men. He exhibited outstanding bravery in the field and had an intense concern for the men under his command. At the time, there were no army pensions so, rather than let his men starve, he bought pubs for every one of his disabled non-commissioned officers. He died £37,000 in debt (£4m today) but the pubs are a lasting tribute.

Elaine, thank you for this extra information! I noticed a sign giving some of these details next to the door of the pub. Thanks for sharing it with others who pass by!

I have been reading your blog for several weeks now & finding it very inspiring! I happened upon it by pure chance (looking up Alice in Wonderland in a Google search!?!) but, as I'd been having an internal debate with myself about becoming a teacher myself, i book marked it, & carried on reading.

One of the main reasons for this was that, although I have friends who teach, & i myself work very happily as a teaching assistant (special needs dept), I could not find a single soul to encourage me...every one seems so unhappy with their choice of career...and all of them stress that i'd have no time for a life...you seem to manage that very well, you always seem very positive & buoyant & I appreciate that. I always try to be like that myself, & so I know its not always the easiest path to take.

Anyway, I have an interview later this week, to get a place in a graduate training programme. If I hadn't been reading your blog, I'd probably pass up that avenue, so thankyou for being my (unwitting!) accomplice.

Best wishes, Corrina.

Wow! I am so touched! Thank you so much for letting me know - I am very happy that you have enjoyed reading my blog, and am delighted that you have made the decision to follow the GTP path into teaching! It is a hard path at times, and yes, it is time consuming - as no doubt you are aware! - but it is also a rewarding one, and it can be fun as well, on occasion. All the very best as you step out on your new journey!
